  • What are Early Intervention and Preschool Special Education? This workshop is designed to introduce the world of Early Intervention or Preschool Special Education services. The workshop will provide information about the process from referral to evaluation to delivery of services. It will also inform participants about what services may include: how an IFSP/IEP is developed and give them an overview of the child’s rights under IDEA.
  • What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)? This workshop is specifically designed for providers and parents of children from 3-5 years of age who are receiving special education services. The content will include an introduction to the basic format of IEPs, a guided tour through a sample IEP, and participant problem solving about ways to incorporate IEP goals into daily activities.
  • Moving On: Transitioning families (From EI to CPSE or CPSE to CSE): Making a transition easier occurs when families and providers understand the process. It is a time of excitement and anxiety. For families of children with special needs this transition can be even more challenging. This workshop will help participants to understand the transition process to be an active member of the transition team, understand the difference between EI and CPSE or CPSE and CSE, to understand the components of an IEP, and to strategize ways to introduce new providers to the child. Transition is a time of opportunity and growth, celebrate it!
  • Getting Ready for Kindergarten:  Starting kindergarten is an important step in the lives of children and their parents. Parents and providers need to take a close look at the child’s development in many areas to help determine whether a child is ready to begin kindergarten whether the child may benefit from another year of preschool. This workshop will review some questions and activities to help prepare for the child and parent for kindergarten.
  • Writing IFSP/IEP Goals: This workshop will explore the use of the child’s present levels of performance as a foundation for writing realistic and measureable goals and objectives and to identify services. Goals of an IFSP/IEP should generalize across programs and be written to meet the unique needs of the student and not for specific curriculum or programs.
  • Positive Guidance and Behavior Strategies:  All behavior is a form of communication. It is up to the adults in a child’s life to figure out what the child is trying to communicate through their behavior. This workshop will take a look at what behaviors might communicate and how to respond to these behaviors in a nurturing and respectful way.
  • Challenging Behavior Series: Helping Teachers Work Better with Young Children (0-5) with Challenging Behavior: This series includes 8 modules that are designed to help early childhood professionals to better understand, define, prevent and respond to challenging behaviors. All eight modules can be addressed or a program can choose the specific modules that suit individual classroom needs. These modules are based on the DVD’s created by the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative; Facing the Challenge and Classroom Moments. This can also be designed as mentorship both in and out of the classroom for staff. Mentorship would include observations, training, implementation, and follow up based on this increasingly difficult topic. Modules include:

    3. Why Do Kids Misbehave?
    4. Parents As Partners
    5. Prevention Strategies
    6. Behavioral Planning Part 1
    7. Behavioral Planning Part 2

  • The Sensory System and its effect on Behavior: Our sensory system allows our brains to receive information and to use this information to respond to the environment to feel comfortable and safe. A child that has an over or under responsive sensory system will face challenges in the classroom that often are viewed as challenging behaviors rather than as the child’s expression of sensory system issues. Participants will explore the sensory system, how it may interfere with a child’s development, and how to help children and families as the child’s sensory system matures.
  • Including ALL Kids:  More and more children with special needs are enrolling in childcare programs and oftentimes, with this enrollment comes some concern from providers about how to best serve all the children in the class. This workshop will discuss why inclusion is important for children, families, staff, and communities as well as how to modify your instruction and/or environment to include all children as part of the curriculum.
  • Supporting Social Emotional Literacy and Development: Social Emotional Development is a child’s ability to understand the feelings of others, control their own feelings and behaviors, and get along with peers. In order for children to gain these abilities, they need adults to provide instruction, support, and a trusting environment. This workshop will take a look at the importance of social emotional development and provide practical, hands-on solutions that can be downloaded for free and used in the classroom. Utilizing the strategies in this workshop has been shown to reduce challenging behavior and increase school readiness!
  • The Brain Architecture Game: This interactive and engaging training will help you appreciate the impact of early childhood experiences on outcomes across the lifespan.  It will give you an understanding of the powerful role of a child’s experiences on early brain development. Using the materials provided, your goal is to “build a brain” that can withstand the stresses that occur in everyday life, especially for our youngest learners.  This training will leave you with an awareness that experiences shape the structure of the brain for better or worse, and it starts in the earliest years of life.
  • Parent Partnerships:  Creating a working alliance between providers and families is key to successful connections between home and school. This workshop will examine principles for teaming with families and providers to communicate what is working, concerns about the child’s development, and strategies to best serve the child with special needs. Both family members and providers are experts and have so much to offer when they work together in the best interest of the child.
  • Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Age Appropriate Expectation:  This training will explore what it means to be using developmentally appropriate practices for children. We will discuss issues such as circle time, art activities, behavior expectations, etc.
  • Typical & Non-Typical Development: Red Flags of Development: This workshop introduces participants to the importance of knowing typical early childhood development. The areas of development that will be briefly highlighted are fine and gross motor skills, cognition, language, and social and emotional development. Participants will practice observation and use a portion of the developmental checklist. The training will also discuss ways to include providers and families when you are concerned about a child’s development and how to access resources.
  • The Importance of Play:  A child’s work is play and this workshop focuses on why play is important, the benefits for the child, and how we, as providers, can best support children in their play.
